ORDER  OF  WORSHIP

G A T H E R I N G

PRELUDE  -

HYMN  -  “The Magnificat”                           (To the tune – “Amazing Grace”)

      My soul proclaims the Lord my God.  My Spirit sings God’s praise.

      Who looks on me, and lifts me up, that gladness fills my days.

      All nations now will share my joy;  God’s gifts have been outpoured.

      The lowly one God has made great.   I magnify the Lord.

      For those who love the Holy One,           God’s mercy will not die.

      God’s strong right arm puts down the proud, and lifts the lowly high.

      Then let all nations praise our God, the Father and the Son,

      The Spirit blest, who lives in us, while endless ages run.

INVOCATION  -

        Pastor:   In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.

      People:  Amen.

      Pastor:   The heavens declare the glory of God;

      People:  and the skies proclaim the work of His hands.

      Pastor:   The Law of the Lord is perfect, reviving the soul:

      People: The statutes of the Lord are trustworthy, making wise the

                    simple.

      Pastor:   The precepts of the Lord are right, giving joy to the heart.

      People: The commands of the Lord are radiant, giving light to the eyes.

      Pastor:   The fear of the Lord is pure, enduring forever.

      People:  The ordinances of the Lord are sure, and altogether righteous.

      Pastor:   Keep back Your servant also from willful sins;

      People:  may they not rule over me!

CONFESSION

      Pastor:   Who can discern his errors?

      People:  Forgive my hidden faults.                                             (Psalm 19:12 )

      Pastor:    Brothers and sisters in Christ:  God’s Word declares to us today,

                     “if anyone thinks he is something when he nothing, he deceives

                     himself (Gal. 6:3).”  Each of us is guilty of choosing our own way

                     and forsaking the way of the Lord.  We have sinned against our

                      God by placing our will and our desires before His.  God also

                      declares, whatever we sow, we shall also reap.  Deserving

                       judgment, let us confess our sins to God, seeking His forgiveness

                       in the name of Christ, our Lord.

      People:  Lord God, I stand before You today, guilty of untold sins.

                     Among my many sins is the sin of seeking my own will and not

                      Yours.  Even knowing of Your love for me in Christ, I have

                       still rejected Your desire for my life and sought my own.

                       Instead of being concerned for my brothers and sisters in

                       Christ, I have failed to assist them in their times of need and I

                       have chosen  for myself the easier way.  I have sinned, and I

                       cry to You for mercy and forgiveness.  I also pray You to

                       strengthen me to desire Your will and empower me through

                       the work of Your Spirit to accomplish all You desire in my

                       life.  For I ask all this in and through Jesus, my Savior.

                      Amen.

ABSOLUTION  -

      Pastor:  The Word of God is “more precious than gold, than much pure

                    gold . . . sweeter than honey (Psalm 19:10 ).”  The Good News of your

                   God today is that He has taken your sin away and granted to you

                   forgiveness in His Son Jesus Christ.  Therefore, as a called and

                   ordained servant of the Word, I declare the grace of God to you and

                    in the stead and by the command of my Lord Jesus Christ, I forgive

                   you all your sin in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the

                   Holy Spirit.

      People: Amen.  Thanks be to God.

      Pastor:   “Rejoice that your names are written in heaven.”

      People:  Alleluia!  Amen.

HYMN OF THE DAY - “O Christ the Same”

1.      O Christ the same, through all our story’s pages – our loves and

            hopes, our failures and our fears;

Eternal Lord, the king of all the ages, unchanging still amid the

            passing years:

 O living Word, the source of all creation, who spread the skies and

            Set the stars ablaze:

O Christ the same, who wrought our whole salvation,

We bring our thanks for all our yesterdays.

      2.   O Christ the same, the friend of sinners, sharing our inmost thoughts

                        the secrets none can hide;

            Still as of old upon your body bearing the marks of love in triumph

                        glorified:

            O Son of Man, who stooped for us from heaven – O Prince of life, in

                        all your saving power;

            O Christ the same, to whom our hearts are given:

            We bring our thanks for this the present hour.

                                                                - 4 -                                       (continued)

      3.   O Christ the same, secure within whose keeping our lives and loves,

                        our days and years remain;

            Our work and rest, our waking and our sleeping, our calm and

                        storm, our pleasure and our pain:

O Lord of love, for all our joys and sorrows, for all our hopes when

            earth shall fade and flee;

O Christ the same, beyond our brief tomorrows,

            We bring our thanks for all that is to be.

SERMON:  “Word and Consequence” –  Luke 10:1-12, 16 -20

CREED  -  First Article and Meaning – Small Catechism

      Creation

      I believe in God the Father Almighty, Maker of heaven and earth.

      What does this mean?

      I believe that God has made me and all creatures; that He has given me

            my body and soul, eyes, ears, and all my members,

      my reason and all my senses, and still preserves them;

      also clothing and shoes, meat and drink, house and home, wife and

      children, fields, cattle, and all my goods;

      that He richly and daily provides me with all that I need to support this

            body and life;

      that He defends me against all danger and guards and protects me

            from all evil;

      and all this purely out of fatherly, divine goodness and mercy,

      without any merit or worthiness in me;

      for all which it is my duty to thank and praise, to serve and obey Him.

      This is most certainly true.

            He crowns the year with blessing, with plenty and with peace.

      3.   Bring to this sacred altar the gifts his goodness gave,

            The golden sheaves of harvest, the souls Christ died to save.

CANTICLE  -  “Now the Silence”

      Now the silence, now the peace, now the empty hands uplifted;

      Now the kneeling, now the Father’s arms in welcome;

      Now the hearing, now the pow’r, now the vessel brimmed for pouring;

      Now the body, now the blood, now the joyful celebration;

      Now the wedding, now the songs, now the heart forgiven leaping;

      Now the Spirit’s visitation, now the Son’s epiphany,

      Now the Father’s blessing.  Now.  Now.  Now.

PRAYER & BENEDICTION

HYMN  -  “Jesus, Still Lead On”

1.   Jesus, still lead on till our rest be won;

      And although the way be cheerless, we will follow calm and fearless;

      Guide us by your hand to our fatherland.

2.   If the way be drear, if the foe be near, let no faithless fears o’ertake us,

      Let not faith and hope forsake us; safely past the foe to our home we go.

3.   When we seek relief from a long-felt grief,

      When temptations come alluring, make us patient and enduring;

      Show us that bright shore where we weep no more.

4.   Jesus, still lead on till our rest be won; Heav’nly leader, still direct us,

      Still support, console, protect us, till we safely stand in our father-land.

COMMUNION   STATEMENT

The Lord Jesus, on the night he was betrayed, took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and said, “This is my body, which is for you; do this in remembrance of me.”  In the same way, after supper he took the cup saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood; do this, whenever you drink it, in remembrance of me.”  For whenever you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes.  I Corinthians 11:23-26.

“One is truly worthy and well prepared who has faith in these words, “Given and shed for you for the remission of sins.”  But the one that does not believe these words, or doubts, is unworthy and unprepared; for the words ‘for you’ require all hearts to believe”  -

                        Luther’s Small Catechism
