ORDER  OF  WORSHIP

G A T H E R I N G

PRELUDE  -

HYMN  -  “Dearest Jesus, at Your Word”

      1.   Dearest Jesus, at your word we have come again to hear you;

            Let our thoughts and hearts be stirred and in glowing faith

                        be near you.

            As the promises here given, Draw us wholly up to heaven.

      4.   Father, Son, and Holy Ghost, praise to you and adoration!

            Grant us what we need the most: Your blest Gospel’s

                        consolation

            While we here on earth await you till in heav’n with praise we

                        greet you.

INVOCATION  &  CONFESSION  &  ABSOLUTION  -

        People:   Who am I?

      Pastor:     When I consider Your heavens, the work of Your fingers, the

                     moon and the stars, which You have set in place.

      Men:      what is man that you are mindful of him,

      Women:  the son of man, that You care for him?                       (Psalm 8:3-4)

      Men:      For I know my transgressions, and my sin is always before

                       me.

      Women:  Against You, You only, have I sinned and done what is evil in                           Your sight . . .

      Men:      Surely I was sinful at birth,

      Women:  sinful from the time my mother conceived me.          (Psalm 51:3-5)

(Silence for a time of reflection)

- 2 -

      All:            We have sinned against You in thought, word, and deed.  We

                     deserve Your punishment.  We seek Your forgiveness.  In the

                     name of Jesus, and because of His sacrifice for us, forgive us

                     our sin.

      People:   How can I know that God will really forgive my sin?

      Pastor:     For Christ’s love compels us, because we are convinced that one

                     died for all, and therefore all died.

      People:   And He died for all, that those who live should no longer live                                    for themselves but for Him who died for them and was

                       raised  again.

      Pastor:     Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has

                     gone, the new has come!

      People:   God made Him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in Him

                     we might become the righteousness of God.

      Pastor:     God the Almighty Creator is our loving Father.  He sent Jesus to

                       be our great Redeemer.  Jesus, the only begotten Son of God,

                       came down from heaven to be our Savior.  He took on our sin

                       and became sin in our place, so that your sin might be forgiven

                       through faith in Him.  Because of His incarnation, life, death, and

                     resurrection we have forgiveness in His name.  Therefore, as a

                     called and ordained servant of the Word, I forgive you all your

                       sins in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy

                       Spirit.

      People:   Amen.

KYRIE/HYMN OF PRAISE – “By All Your Saints in Warfare”

      1.   By all Your saints in warfare, For all Your saints at rest,

            Your holy name, O Jesus, forevermore be blest!

            For You have won the battle that they might wear the crown;

            And now they shine in glory reflected from Your throne.

      20. All praise for Mary Magdalene, whose wholeness was restored

            By You, her faithful master, Her Savior and her Lord.

            On Easter morning early a word from You sufficed;

            For she was first to see You, Her Lord, the risen Christ.

      3.   Then let us praise the Father and worship God the Son

            And sing to God the Spirit, Eternal Three in One,

            Till all the ransomed number fall down before the throne,

            Ascribing pow’r and glory and praise to God alone.

SERMON  -  “Go and Tell”  -  John 20:1-2, 11-18

CREED  -  Second Article and Meaning  (Small Catechism)

      Redemption

      And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by

            the Holy Ghost, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius

            Pilate, was crucified, dead, and buried;  He descended into hell; the

            third day He rose again from the dead; He ascended into heaven

            and sitteth on the right hand of God the Father Almighty;  from

            thence He shall come to judge the quick and the dead.

What does this mean?

I believe that Jesus Christ, true God, begotten of the Father from eternity, and also true man, born of the Virgin Mary, is my Lord, who has redeemed me, a lost and condemned creature, purchased and won me from all sins, from death, and from the power of the devil;

      not with gold or silver but with His holy, precious blood and with His innocent suffering and death,

                                                    - 4 -                                                  (continued)

      that I may be His own and live under Him in His kingdom and serve Him in everlasting righteousness, innocence, and blessedness,

      even as He is risen from the dead, lives and reigns to all eternity.

        This is most certainly true.

THE  PEACE  OF  THE  LORD  AND  GREETINGS

OFFERING  -

OFFERTORY – “We Give You But Your Own”

      We give You but Your own in any gifts we bring;

      All that we have is Yours alone, a trust from You, our King.

      May we Your bounties thus as stewards true receive

      And gladly, Lord, as You bless us, to You our firstfruits give.

LORD’S  PRAYER  -

BENEDICTION

HYMN  -  “Because He Lives”

1.   God sent His Son, they called Him Jesus;

      He came to love, heal, and forgive.

      He lived and died to buy my pardon;

      An empty grave is there to prove my Savior lives.

REFRAIN:  Because He lives I can face tomorrow.

                     Because He lives all fear is gone;

                    Because I know He holds the future;

                    And life is worth the living just because He lives.

2.   How sweet to hold a newborn baby

      And feel the pride and joy He gives;

      But greater still the calm assurance

      This child can face uncertain days because He lives.

REFRAIN.

3.   And then one day I’ll cross the river;

      I’ll fight life’s final war with pain,

      And then as death gives way to victory,

      I’ll see the lights of glory and I’ll know He lives.

REFRAIN.
