INVITE SOMEONE

Grow Your Church From the Outside In is the name of a book written by George Barna, a well-known researcher. This book is a report on an extensive survey he made of people who were not part of any Christian church. When he asked the unchurched what kind of church unchurched people preferred, these were the leanings of the majority or plurality: “ provide traditional music; feature topical sermons; create an informal environment; have fewer than 200 people; include substantial participation in the service by everyone; allow children to attend the services with their parents; maintain a reserved and orderly service; and have time set aside within the service for people to pray for and minister to each other.

What is the best way to reach the unchurched, so that they would chose to come to Salem some Sunday for our worship service? Churches try a number of media methods: TV or radio broadcasts of worship services, TV and newspaper ads, mailed flyers, and telephone solicitation. But according to Barna’s research, the three most effective ways, by far, are “invited by a friend or neighbor; invited by the pastor; or heard good things about the church from a friend.” Adopted from Trinity, Memphis newsletter

“Singing Together”

            A Piece by Garrison Keillor:

“Lutherans are bred from childhood to sing in four-part harmony. It’s a talent that comes from sitting on the lap of someone singing alto or tenor or bass and hearing the harmonic intervals by putting your head against that person’s rib cage...I once sang the bass line of “Children of the Heavenly Father” in a room with about three thousand Lutherans in it; and when we finished, we all had tears in our eyes, partly from the promise that God will not forsake us, partly from the proximity of all those lovely voices… These Lutherans, who love to sing in four-part harmony are the sort of people you would call up when you’re in deep distress. If you’re dying, they’ll comfort you. If you’re lonely, they’ll talk to you. And if you’re hungry, they’ll give you tuna salad!”

Trinitarian Guide for Public Prayer in Worship

Public Prayer and private prayer are different. As prayer leaders think about public prayer, the following is a general guideline for writing and praying the public prayer of the church in Lutheran Worship.

1. Holy Trinity – a prayer of the Church is in the name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. In some way the Trinity is referred to in the flow of the prayer.

2. Trinity of our life orders or structures: Society and government, family, church. In a prayer of the Church we pray for the church and her leaders, the nation and her leaders, and families and their leaders and members.

3. S T P = sorrows, thanks, praise. In the prayer of the Church we pray for those suffering sorrow and loss, we give thanks with those who give thanks, and we praise God the Father, Son, and Spirit for all His gifts and for hearing us.

S T P             is the heart and core of the prayers of the psalter – the prayer and songbook of the Scriptures.

THANKSGIVING WORSHIP SCHEDULE

The annual THANKSGIVING EVE SERVICE, sponsored by the South Buffalo Ecumenical Association, will be held at 7:30 pm on Wednesday, November 24 at a location to be announced. We hope that many will attend this community event to give thanks to God for another year of abundant blessings upon us all.

Our THANKSGIVING DAY SERVICE will be at 10:00 am on Thursday, November 25, with Holy Communion. As has been our tradition, we ask everyone to bring food items (as much as a grocery bag, if possible) for the South Buffalo Community Table on Southside Avenue in Buffalo; and leave them in the narthex on the way into church. Cash gifts are desired and can be dropped in the offering. (Food and cash can be brought in before Thanksgiving Day, too, if you’ll be away for the holiday.)

What a privilege we have to gather in church as a congregation family to give thanks to God for another blessed year! Let’s all contribute through our presence, prayers, our generous offerings of food and cash for the South Buffalo Community Table, as well as for our own church!

Generous thankofferings also will help us to meet our commitments and eliminate our deficits for the year. What better motive for doing this THANKS-GIVING?

ADVENT COIN FOLDERS

They will be sent out before the first Sunday of Advent, November 28, 2004 for your use during the Advent season. Please insert them in the reminder envelopes, to be mailed with the December DOVE. If family members of the household which receives the DOVE need more reminder envelopes, you will find them on the table near the mail slots or call the office for the secretary to put them in your mail slot.

Please return your coin folders at one of the holiday services, December 12 or 19. Deposit them in the special box on the narthex table, rather than in the offering plate because of bulk. All monies received in these folders will be used for various charities listed in our budget. Also note that all Christmas festival envelopes will automatically go to Synod and District for missions, unless marked otherwise.

MEETINGS

WOMEN’S GUILD

Our next meeting will be on November 9, 2004. Supper at 5:30 pm, meeting to follow.

Sunday, November 14 is our BAKED GOODS SALE, after church, during the coffee hour. We would appreciate donations of baked goods, homemade candy, craft items, from anyone, not just Guild members. BEST SELLING ITEMS  are pies, coffee cakes, breads and cookies. Cakes and cupcakes do not sell. Please leave baked goods in the kitchen on Sunday morning and mark them “Women’s Guild” bake sale with the price marked.

Niagara Lutheran Home is looking for toiletry items to be used as stocking stuffers. Please don’t wrap these gifts. SUGGESTIONS ARE: liquid soap, toothpaste, dental floss, hand lotion, powder, deodorants, small packages of Kleenex tissues, after shave lotion, etc. They cannot use bars of soap, shampoo, motel or Avon samples. These are too small for some residents to handle. A box marked NIAGARA LUTHERAN HOME will be in the narthex in November.

Our Christmas party will be on Wednesday, December 15 at 12:00 Noon at the Holiday Inn, 601 Dingens Street, Buffalo, NY. Please give your five dollar monetary gift for the Niagara Lutheran Home to our treasurer, Sallie Langner.

Our meetings in January, February and March will be at 12:00 Noon instead of 7:00 pm.

HELP WANTED – ALTAR COMMITTEE

We are looking for men and women to serve on the Altar Committee. Working on teams on a monthly basis, the committees prepare the altar with the proper paraments and linens for each service and set up for Communion and Baptism as part of its duties. Many of the dedicated members of this committee have served for decades and they could really use your help. The more people we have serving the less often any one individual will have to serve. Please prayerfully consider this service and if you decide to help please see Gretchen Putzman or leave your name and phone number at the church office.

CHRISTMAS CARD EXCHANGE

Just a reminder that I will be shopping for needy families again this year, starting November 28. Instead of mailing your Christmas cards, put them in the mailboxes in the upper church hall and donate the money you would have spent on postage. Please have all donations to me no later than December 19, so I have time to shop and deliver the food before Christmas. Thank you for all your help.

                                                            God bless,  Joanne Kushka

HOW COOL IT IS!

Have you seen the newest addition to our church ‘family’? Our new refrigerator worked marvelously for the roast beef dinner. There was plenty of room for all of the food and made life so much easier to prepare and serve our guests. It was purchased from Buffalo Hotel Supply and delivered to Salem on Tuesday, October 5. Despite its size, the men only took one half hour to bring it down in the elevator, to the Social room and into the kitchen. THANK YOU to the Women’s Guild, Thrivent Financial for Lutherans, the Sunday School and the Youth Group who all made generous donations and shared in the cost. We will all have the benefit of its use.

Committee: Ethel Berkhoudt, Judy Hoffmann, Delores Landwehr, Norrine Nagel

ROAST BEEF DINNER FOLLOW-UP

Another successful dinner was held at Salem on Friday, October 8, 2004. With pumpkins and fall colored leaves as decorations around the room we served 200 people with hearty appetites. They represented a wide range of the church, community members and fellow Lutherans. Everyone was complimentary and encouraged us to continue this service.                                                                                                                   Thank you to everyone who helped in any way from donating food, setting tables, baking squash, writing publicity, roasting the meat, serving the food, working in the kitchen and take out areas, washing dishes, cutting pies, pouring coffee and cleaning up. Men, women and youth of Salem were all involved and having a fun time working together.                                                                                                                                               Special thanks to Mel Beyers for making our large sign out front; to Steve Jarmusz who helped set up the roasters and came during the week to fix blown fuses; to Carolyn Feider who sliced the huge pieces of beef; and to Jay Delaney, our Thrivent Financial for Lutherans representative who literally rolled up his sleeves, poured coffee and helped wash dishes most of the evening.                                                                                          With all this support we were able to realize a profit of $1,000 which will be partly matched by Thrivent to benefit Christian Education here at Salem. The committee welcomes your comments and suggestions for next year.                                                                                                                                                                                 Shirley Banas, Ethel Berkhoudt, Ruth Carr, Leola Colvin, Delores Landwehr, Norrine Nagel-Chairman
